Primary 5 Science Experiment: Mummifying Apples!
Our Primary 5 pupils have been exploring the fascinating world of preservation in science. As part of their topic on Ancient Egypt and mummification, they carried out an exciting experiment – mummifying apples!
The class learned how the Ancient Egyptians used preservatives to keep bodies from decaying thousands of years ago. To understand the process, pupils applied similar principles to apples. They covered fresh apple slices in a mixture of preservatives such as salt and baking soda and left them for one week. During this time, they observed changes and discovered how removing moisture helps prevent decay.
The experiment was a fantastic way to combine history and science, encouraging curiosity and hands-on learning. Pupils were amazed at the transformation and enjoyed sharing their findings with the class.
